Photographer Folberg traveled the world for three years visiting Jewish communities and photographing both grand-scale and modest synagogues. His rich color images are grouped in chapters according to region the Mediterranean, Asia, the Americas and the Caribbean, northern Europe, Eastern Europe, and Israel and are accompanied by his account of the making of the photographs. Augmenting the visual display is an essay (by Yom Tov Assis, a scholar affiliated with the Hebrew University of Jerusalem) which focuses on the social and cultural history of the Jews.
