In 1906 a gifted young Talmudic scholar named Bernard Revel came to the United States in the wave of mass immigration from Eastern Europe. “As he looked about, he found Orthodox Judaism in a sorry, pathetic state of chaos and confusion. The rabbis born and bredin Europe were learned scholars and masters of the religious law, in all its minutiae. Accustomed to deference, even reverence, as recognized authorities and community leaders, they came into a condition bordering on anarchy in Jewish religious life, in a new land of unprecedented tolerance and freedom. with no knowledge of the English language and American culture, European rabbis could command no respect and exert no influence on the young. Bernard Revel determined to create a school of Talmudic study that would also provide an American college education to produce American Orthodox rabbis who could mold and sustain a viable authentic Judaism in the New World. This is the story of the man and his vision, and his achievement. From a modest yeshiva in a synagogue building on New York’s Lower East Side, to imposing quarters on the heights of Upper Manhattan, Bernard Revel steered the course and development of Yeshiva College, the first college of liberal arts and sciences under Jewish auspices, until it became a mighty educational force, a veritable dynamo, in American Jewry, that remained consistently loyal to its New-World vision ofTorah Judaism.
