Claude dansey deltog i bekæmpelsen af matabele-opstanden i 1896 og senere i Boerkrigen, hvor han begyndte den efterretningsvirksomhed, der de næste årtier blev hans liv, først i Afrika, senere Amerika og i 1930erne i England, hvor Dansey stod i spidsen for sin egen, halvt private organisation "Z". Under 2. verdenskrig forestod han den britiske MI6 pg MI9 organisation.
