An album of photographs, taken by Smith in the 1990s when he accompanied groups of British visitors to Poland, some of them Holocaust survivors. Pp. 4-11, "Forgotten Places, " reflect on the necessity to remember the Holocaust, particularly because survivors are passing away. Pt. 1 (p. 13-41), "Shadows of a Former World, " consists of short photographic sketches accompanied by Smith's reflections; the sketches focus on the remnants of past Jewish life, as well as on antisemitism in Poland today. The photographic sketches of pt. 2 (p. 42-85), "Where Memories Meet, " examine sites of mass destruction in Poland, including Auschwitz, Majdanek, Chelmno, and Treblinka. Notes that Jewish and Christian memories of the sufferings are still conflicted in Poland.
