Giulio Gatti-Casazza was director of the Metropolitan Opera in New York for 27 years and before that for a decade occupied the same post at La Scala in Milan. He was the longest serving and most successful major impresario of the century, who ruled the two major operatic institutions during what is now called "the golden age of opera", a more leisurely time when singers ( and a large part of operatic interest has always revolved around the great star singers) would stay a whole season with one opera house and not hazard the voice-injuring risks of even pre-jet age travel. The distinguished American critic Howard Taubman has written a valuable and thoughtful introduction that evaluates Gatti's career and compares it to the reign of Rudolf Bing, the longest-serving post-war Met director, whose problems were similar but whose style was very different, and he concludes "Gatti's record by far outshines Bing's." This highly readable autobiography is a sizeable chunk of operatic history and through its pages the singers, conductors and composers of the pre-war period come vividly to life as people, while every possessor of an operatic library will treasure the volume for its information about premieres, people and events. After many years out of print, this operatic classic, with many new and little-known illustrations, joins the Opera Library.
