Shema Yisrael is unique in the annals of Holocaust literature. Compiled under the auspices of the Kaliver Rebbe, shlita, himself a survivor of Hitler's inferno, it is a collection of more than 500 first-person accounts of mesirus nefesh, self-sacrifice, under the direst conditions. This encyclopedic work includes hundreds of photos, and the biographies and pictures of 150 communal leaders, rebbes, and scholars who perished in those terrible days of wrath. The legacy of European Jews was stolen from them; what remains for us, their heirs, is the knowledge of their sacrifice, generosity of spirit, and unshakeable faith - a precious legacy to be handed down to the next generation.
