Sir Charles Ravenstreet, an electrical engineer in his fifties, is at a loose end. He has been edged out of the company that he helped build. Not accustomed to retirement, he soon is enticed into an association with Mervil, an entrepreneur who proposes to manufacture a nonaddictive drug that relieves the taker from all responsibility and anxiety. Mervil also views his drug as a means of reducing mankind to amiable obedience. But Ravenstreet accidentally meets three old men who expose Mervil's plan and introduce Ravenstreet to a vision of their own - the transformation of his personal attitude to the passing of time. J.B. Priestley, who died in 1984, was one of the ablest practitioners of the neglected art of telling a story. The Magicians is a work of keen psychological insight.
