Memoirs of Beiles, born in 1927 in Kovno, relating his Holocaust experiences. Describes the German occupation in June 1941; massacres of Jews, in which many Lithuanians participated; and life in the ghetto. Beiles was the only survivor of a mass shooting of several thousand Jews in October 1941 at the Ninth Fort, where his parents were killed; the murders were carried out mainly by local Lithuanians. Beiles returned to the ghetto, but soon escaped and was helped by Lithuanians. Father Stanislovas Jakubauskis, who had been Beilis's teacher, and Genė Premeneckaitė, who hid him in the village of Muniškiai, were posthumously awarded the title of Righteous Among the Nations. Beilis again returned to the ghetto, where his brother Chaim was killed. He then began to smuggle children out of the ghetto, with the help of Father Jakubauskis. When the ghetto was liquidated, Beiles was deported to Dachau, where his brother Yosif, the last of his family, was killed. After his liberation, Beiles committed some acts of revenge; he then immigrated to Palestine.
